Christmas Texas Style

Merry Christmas from Texas... where they do everything BIG!!

This year we went to Texas a little early. We went the week before Christmas and came home on Christmas Eve. From now on Santa will be coming to our house on Christmas morning and we will go to TX either the week before or the day after. It's just easier on Santa. ;0) The trip started off a little rocky. We had a terrible flight with Charlotte. She SCREAMED the last 40 minutes and there was no making her happy. Every trick and bribe made things worse. By the time we got there she was a snotty, sweaty mess, and so was I. Sarah Grace and Adam had a great flight on the other side of the aisle from the chaos.

Our first day was yucky, Charlotte woke up with pink eye in both eyes. I called my Dr and she wouldn't call in a prescription so we had to find a Dr in Houston. Lovely, just how we wanted to spend our first day, in a waiting room. We got her all fixed up and by the next day she looked a lot better.

We stayed very busy. We went to the zoo one day and stayed all day. It was a great day, it was cloudy and warm and perfect for being outside. The girls loved it. Even little Ava oooed and ahhed at the animals. Charlotte liked the animals, but mainly enjoyed her freedom to run (and eating pizza)! Big surprise there! It was a great zoo! The animals were all really close up and there were lots of handlers out interacting with the animals and answering questions. Both of the girls really liked the tiger and the elephants. We got to see the the lions getting fed treats and monkeys playing ball. 3 very tired little girls and 6 exhausted adults piled back in the car and headed home. The girls had fun playing with each other. They played tea party, a lot, all over the house. There were pieces of tea set everywhere and it was well worn by the end of the week. Ava and Charlotte liked exploring the forbidden rooms of the house together. They were found behind beds, in closets and bathrooms more than once. They were partners in crime. Sarah Grace always has fun with Lollie and Tyler. Lollie read lots of stories with the girls and SG loves curling up with Tyler and watching movies. Charlotte just loves saying his name, "TY! -wer".
We all piled in the car at night at went to look at Christmas lights. It is no small task to fit 6 adults and 3 car seats in one SUV. Lauren and I shared the front passenger seat more than once. But it was fun, we got Starbucks and cupcakes and listened to Charlotte sing Christmas carols like no one else could all while packed in like sardines looking at lights.
Monday night we went to an OU basketball game. They just happened to be playing at Rice University, in Houston, when we were in town. We left the 2 little girls at home with a really sweet sitter and took SG to the game. She loved it. It was a really small gym so the players were right there. It made it easy for SG to pay attention and enjoy the game. A lady beside us gave her pompoms and she got a horn/whistle and she enjoyed using them when we scored. It was a great game and we won! Go SOONERS!
And it just wouldn't be Christmas in Houston without a trip to the Houston Mounted Patrol stables. Adam and I took Sarah Grace one afternoon to feed the horses. I'm not going to lie, I enjoyed it as much as she did. Both of our girls love horses. Sarah Grace did really well, she had no fear, and these are HUGE horses! She went right up to them and fed them carrots and apples. One really took to her. He was one of the biggest there and he'd lean out of his stall and put his head down in her face while she talked to him. It was really sweet he was more like a cat than a horse. When all of our treats were gone and our hands were frozen from horse drool (it was 38 degrees that day) we left.
Our last day in Houston was our Self family Christmas. We started by SG saying a sweet, and very grown up, Christmas prayer and Grandaddy read the Christmas story from Luke. Then it was time for the elves to pass out gifts. The girls opened first and then were off to play while the grown ups went at a more leisurely pace. It was a fun morning watching the kids and enjoying family. After the girls all took naps we let SG open her birthday presents. Everyone had already brought them so we had a mini party and sang and did gifts. She felt very special. That night we went out one more time, packed in the car, to see some more lights and then came home to pack up...
